"A 24-year-old Denver man suspected of causing $11,000 in damage to Colorado Democratic Party headquarters made his first court appearance this morning.
A small smile appeared on vandalism suspect Maurice Joseph Schwenkler's face as he saw more than a dozen supporters gathered in the courtroom.
His bail was set at $5,000.
Police say Schwenkler and an at-large suspect took a hammer to 11 picture windows early Tuesday morning at Democratic headquarters in Denver's art district. A Party official said the vandals appeared to attack posters promoting President Barack Obama and his health care reform plans.
Schwenkler's supporters, a group of flannel-clad 20-somethings, declined to comment after today's hearing.
"We haven't been able to talk to her," one woman said. "We don't know why she broke the windows."
The woman did not provide further information about the gender discrepancy. The Denver Police Department has identified Schwenkler as a man.
A patrolling police officer came across the vandals around 2:20 a.m. Tuesday.
Police continue to look for the second suspect, who fled the scene on a bicycle, according to department spokesman Sonny Jackson.
"He (Schwenkler) is not saying a whole lot right now," Jackson said.
The incident launched accusations early Tuesday from state Party Chairwoman Pat Waak that Republican rhetoric surrounding the health care debate had somehow prompted the vandalism.
But that was before public records revealed Schwenkler was paid $500 in 2008 to canvass for a Democratic candidate and was arrested for unlawful assembly on Sept. 5 in St. Paul, Minn., the last day of the Republican National Convention.
A spokesman for the St. Paul Police Department said Schwenkler was one of a large group of RNC protesters arrested after they gathered on a city bridge and refused to disperse. Schwenkler's case was dismissed.
Waak later softened her statement, saying that debate on both sides has veered toward uncivil.
But GOP Chairman Dick Wadhams said Waak owes conservatives an apology.
She made "sweeping generalization that if you're opposed to (Obama's health care) plan, you're capable of that kind of despicable act," Wadhams said."
