I'm an atheist and a humanist, tolerant of those who find solace in their religious beliefs, provided they reciprocate that tolerance towards those of different faiths or none.
I recognize that the above statement, foundational to my belief, is also grounded in christianity, because I was born and grew up in western societies, even though I've never believed in god(s). Humanism is the intellectual answer to religion, the conviction that man has evolved beyond the supernatural to ascribe values deemed human.
It is only when I spent time in Hong Kong and China (about 4 years) that a realized the influence Christianity had on my atheist beliefs. Tolerance, for example, is not in human nature, it's a construct born of intolerance, a moral value created by man to prevent destruction and linked to devine punishment from the supernatural for failing to abide by that value. It's the beginning of societal construct beyond dominance by the strongest.
China has minimal Christian influence and generations of anti religious communism despite tolerance towards Buddhism/Taoism. China also has a huge population that only a few decades ago was considered 3rd world poverty.
Walking the streets of Shanghai, I was often puzzled and sometimes offended by the brutish behavior of the common people towards each other and my primary reaction was, how intolerant they are. With time I realized their behavior is adapted to their circumstances as much as mine are. In a social construct in which order is maintained by hierarchical dominance and values are ascribed by the dominant political philosophy of the century, tolerance is simply not one of them, neither is kindness for that matter.
When I left China, I came to view religion as another social instrument, with elected government and the enforcement of police and law to maintain order in otherwise destructive human behavior. I came to accept atheism intellectually rather than as a reactionary response to religious nonsense.

Atheism I wonder is a word which is misinterpreted.
Athiesm is a disbelief in a God.
Athiesm is the opposite of religion, except religious people are in bondage to their beliefs while athiests basically don't give a fuck and perhaps scoff about a God.
I don't scoff about a God, I scoff at people who are deluded by strong feeling they have this personal relationship to a Jewish version of a god.
