Automation and declining birth rates are the future. When countries populations do decline, they will eventually go back up, such is human nature. Populations have fluctuated since the beginning of time...

Exactly. Technology enabled the human population grow out of control, it will also be the answer to declining to more normal levels. I'm always shocked when there's talk about some animal species, population is some 5,000 and it's considered a healthy level.
Unlike China, these African and South Asian countries (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh) refuse to implement any population control measures. And somehow now these "poor people" are the responsibility of everyone else who acted responsibly.

In the 70's there were only 40-50 years of "proven fossil fuel reserves" in the world. Today there's closer to 100 years of proven reserves - 50 years later. We should have run out by now.

In the 1950s with a few billion people worldwide, about 50% of the world was "food insecure". Using that same definition today with nearly 8 billion people on the planet, the number is around 5%.

Extending retirement age is not necessarily due to shortage of labor. It could be government do not have the money to pay pension.
