Deciding on a Backtesting and Trading Platform

Hey all,

I read through this and I almost thought "I really gotta get AmiBroker" until the comments about futures and forex since I do mostly both, don't do stocks. I use IB and they advertise compatability and I want to backtest.

What is lacking in terms of futures with AmiBroker? Is it the adjustment of data? I don't understand what a software could "lack" in terms of futures or forex, although I guess for stocks a powerful "screener" would be a bonus.

Please advise.

i am looking for such a software that can test a dynamic portfolio of systems over a portfolio of market and in more than one time frame, then in the reports it would show which system(s) from the portfolio of systems performed well on which market for which time frame....

i hope it exists..

Then you should stop looking at TradersStudio. The product was designed for real traders. We calculate profits in terms that futures traders are use to. At the tradeplan level we calculate things like leverage reports ect, that professional trades look at.
We even do automatic currency conversion of international futures. In terms of forex, we are not real time so it would be more of a backtesting tool for you but we do the interest rate cost of carry calculations in our analysis. We also report profits in both dollars and pips.

You can do your dynamic rebalancing in TradersStudio. I am going to be working on some demo soon so if you buy the product I will be happy to help you get the dynamic rebalancing features working for you.

Is it hard to make a demo version as soon as you have the full version or are you just worried about piracy and such? Legitimate concerns of course. I understand...
 
Deciding on a Backtesting and Trading Platform?

I suggest you plan to purchase, and use, and discard, more than one of them. You won't REALLY know what you want, and what you don't want, until you start actually using the software. What YOU want will be different than what other traders want, and will also (regrettably) be different than what some software developers have delivered.

Buy them in increasing order of price, cheapest first. This way it hurts less to throw something away; you're getting the cheapest possible hands-on education. The very cheapest of all is, of course, free. You may be able to find free arr-matey-avast-ye-scurvy-sea-dogs copies of trading software in places on the Net. Free and 2000i might be search keywords to get you started.

Try the free software and see if it meets your needs. It very well might; tens of thousands of traders use it and presumably love it. A half-dozen books on Amazon dot com talk about this software and include systems pre-coded in its programming language.

If you decide the free software isn't for you, there's well-loved trading software that sells for less than $200. Hunt around, ask around, you'll find it. Pay the money and give it a try.

Then if necessary move up to $500 software. Then $800. And so forth. Eventually you'll find what YOU like and the experience of trying all the cheaper alternatives will help you appreciate the tradeoffs among alternatives.
