Brunei makes gay sex and adultery punishable by death by stoning

Beginning next week, gay sex and adultery will be punishable by death by stoning in Brunei under a new law that comes into effect April 3.

A strict set of new laws was announced in 2014 by the country’s sultan, Hassanal Bolkiah, who doubles as the prime minister. The country became the first in its region to adapt Islamic sharia law. But the laws’ implementation in the small Southeast Asian kingdom has been gradual. A notice of the April 3 start date went up on the Brunei attorney general’s website Dec. 29.

One wonders though, is our society's scorn and shaming of these youths into a life of misery and often times eventual suicide that much better than a swift death?


Yes I'm being melodramatic but not by much.
 
Say what you want about Trump liking "strongmen", but at least.....

PRESIDENT OBAMA: Well, it is a great pleasure to welcome my good friend, His Majesty the Sultan of Brunei. The Sultan and I had the opportunity to get to know each other from a series of multilateral meetings, particularly the ASEAN East Asia Summit meeting. He is a key leader in the Southeast Asia region but also widely respected around the world.

And part of the reason that we thought now was a good time for a meeting here in the Oval Office is because His Majesty will be hosting the next ASEAN East Asia Summit meeting in Brunei this October. There are a range of issues that we’ve worked on together, and that should be no surprise because the friendship between the United States and Brunei actually dates back 160 years.

His Majesty himself has led his country for 40 years now and he’s gone through nine U.S. Presidents. I won’t ask him which one was his favorite -- (laughter) -- but our interest in having a strong, peaceful, prosperous Asia Pacific region is something that we share.

Those guys are not going to defend some politician for saying something that was a perfectly normal thing to do at the occasion , but if you want to wait , it may be a long time.

He wasn’t killing gays back then, even though he wasn’t pretty batshit crazy then too. Also Obama is talking in general platitudes unlike Trump who actually said he believes Putin over his own intelligence officers.
