Deal Struck on Tax Package

WASHINGTON—President Barack Obama reached agreement Monday with Republican leaders in Congress on a broad tax package that would extend the Bush-era income tax cuts for two years, reduce worker payroll taxes for one year and give more favorable treatment to business investments.

A program of extended benefits for the long-term unemployed, which lapsed last month, would be revived for 13 months, the White House said. The jobless benefits would be financed by federal borrowing rather than by spending cuts.


13 month extension on UI benefits. That is almost 3 years total!

And if you were hiring, would you really want to employ someone who has been paid to do nothing (except a little job hunting) for three years? My guess is that most 99ers (or is it now 150ers?) have lost some skills and drive.

Like some of the long-term unemployed that I know, they have lost the skill of being able to get up before noon, are so bored but can't seem to be able to look for work, come over and annoy you and not even ask if they can help you with anything unless they are paid and stay for hours hoping that you will feed them.


But they have acquired the skill of partying, staying up until 3am, learning new habits like alcohol and tobacco.

Get up at 12:01pm sharp! Take a look around. Go back to bed. Sounds good. No worries except for whether you get unemployment extensions, no stress, predictable income, no worries about having a multi-thousand losing day.

I thought it's an extension of time to max out at 99 weeks for those who haven't. Those who already received 99 weeks will not go to 3 years from what I understand.

The extension does not extend the number of weeks on which anyone can collect unemployment. That number still stands exactly where it did before the extension, which is a maximum of 99 weeks.
