David Einhorn lost a fortune for selling short Tesla from $15B to $1.5B

Depending what you are trading and your age I like my odds better on the long side. The charts just don't lie and over time it's up. It is what it is.
One year the Venezuelan stock was #1 up in the world. Some day the US will be up #1 in the world. Venezuela was #1 when the peso collapsed from hyperinflation. Of course in dollar terms it was a loser. When the $US repeats that hyperinflation scenario, they will also be #1.

Over time it's up ... for some, not all. 2021 is no different than any other year. There are always losers even in roaring bull markets.

Activision is just one example currently at the same price it was 4 years ago!!!!!!!!

List goes on and on.

Hence depending what you trade. You could have entered a trade at any point in time 1-5-10-15-20yrs ago on the spy and been up money or even had you just held.

But I get what you are saying.

Traders need to know that US security system is designed for stocks to go up. Politicians do not like to see stocks to go down. Both Trump and Biden claimed they did the best job since stock market made record when they were or are President. All levels of governments make high tax revenue with the record market.

Even if that's true, one could in theory short overvalued stocks and hedge by being long individual stocks or an index.

Overvalued like DWACko back on Oct 22nd. Now down -71.23% from "all time" high:-

Short-selling a company, in my mind, is akin to going up to the front door of the business and smashing in the door. Setting fire to it. That is not constructive. I will never ever agree with shorting a company. It's BS.
%%
I agree with a lot of that;
except a good short is more like a first responder smashing the door with a house already on fire + do rescue. And in some cases corp management are the arsonists...........
Lots of ways to get '' burned'' \shorting a single stock.
Besides/ Like Art Cashin [floor manager]says ''shorts help fuel the rally ''[when covering:caution::caution::caution::caution::caution::caution:,:caution::caution:]
