It's semantics. Whether an investor, trader, gambler or speculator, the objective is to make a profit. You will probably do fine as any of them as long as you have some kind of risk control in place. (maybe we can rule out the gambler)

I wonder how many traders have turned into investors because they didn't want to take a loss. :)

But, used to be that all longs of stock options were named speculation by the IRS.
(no Long Term gain allowed regardless of the holding period).
Seems that being long a barrel of oil is a whole lot better than owning some out-ot-the-money calls on oil.
The rules changed. Leaps held for more than a year and a day are considered to be long term.
