Binghamton University slaps down professor's 'progressive stacking' section of syllabus for 'non-white folks'

A professor for a sociology course at Binghamton University used her syllabus to tell students that priority is given to "non-white folks" in picking students to call on for classroom discussions.

The syllabus was for a course titled "Social Change - Introduction to Sociology," which is being taught this spring by professor Ana Maria Candela.

A copy of the syllabus states that the professor practices "progressive stacking" during classroom discussions, adding that "non-white folks" are given priority for being called on.

"This means that we try to give priority to non-white folks, to women, and to shy and quiet people who rarely raise their hands," the syllabus read.

The syllabus adds, "It also means that if you are white, male, or someone privileged by the racial and gender structures of our society to have your voice easily voiced and heard, we will often ask you to hold off on your questions or comments to give others priority and will come back to you a bit later or at another time."

In explaining the policy, Candela wrote in the syllabus that it is meant to help privileged individuals "hold space" for others who are "less comfortable speaking first."

So the system works and strikes down such bullshit rather quickly and does not s upport it...

they can't find k-12 examples so have to look at the college level now. We all know there's plenty of yahoo profs w/strange ideas there.

Changing the manuals lag behind....Have no fear that the Collage boards are hard at work updating the manuals
 
Adults take those classes...they can parse the bullshit themselves (like Trump U)

College faculty are fighting back against state bills on critical race theory

Appalled at efforts to limit what they can teach about race and other sensitive subjects, faculty leaders at prominent public universities around the countryhave rallied in recent weeks behind resolutions to reaffirm academic freedom and denounce legislation that would undermine it


These declarations show that the heated debate over state regulation of lessons on race, centered so far largely on K-12 public schools, is rapidly expanding onto college campuses. In this case it pits politicians, mainly Republicans, who depict themselves as guardians of objectivity concerning “divisive concepts,” against professors who say the state has no business meddling in the content of lectures, syllabi and seminars.

The latest skirmish has erupted in Texas.

On Monday, the Faculty Council of the University of Texas at Austin approved, on a 41-to-5 vote with three abstentions, a resolution rejecting “any attempts by bodies external to the faculty to restrict or dictate the content of university curriculum on any matter, including matters related to racial and social justice.” The resolution said the council will “stand firm against any and all encroachment” on faculty authority, including by the legislature.

Afterward, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick (R) denounced the resolution. “I will not stand by and let looney Marxist UT professors poison the minds of young students with Critical Race Theory,” he wrote in a tweet. “We banned it in publicly funded K-12 and we will ban it in publicly funded higher ed.” On Friday, Patrick said he would support ending the job-protection measure known as tenure for professors who teach critical race theory.

This gets back to the reality that students in college are adults. And CRT-based education is appropriate for college-aged students. As long as the courses are voluntary and not mandatory --- the universities & their professors should be allowed to use CRT-based education methods on appropriate courses. A history course is appropriate while a calculus course is not.

CRT-based education methods & lesson plans are not appropriate for K-12 aged children. The reality is that these methods are appropriate for educating adults about history and the original CRT-based lesson plans were designed to be used in a university environment.

A state legislature or state official trying to ban CRT-based education at universities is not appropriate. It is significant overreach -- and nothing more than political posturing.
