Speaking more technically, what occurs is that the normal flow of the energy down the body from the head to the feet is interrupted, and instead some of the energy flows out to others, or upwards to others. This is related to the meaning of the word upset. One steals energy from another by upsetting the other’s energy field, literally.

When subtle energy flows sideways or upwards to some degree, this spins the energy centers or chakras backwards or somewhat abnormally in other ways. This is also related to the loss of energy that can occur to another person.
Many people experience vampirism throughout their lives. Parents do it to their children, teachers do it to their students, lovers and spouses do it to each other, and so on. In other words, the phenomenon occurs commonly. However, it is rarely discussed and hence the need for this article.
