Craps - Dice setting/ Dice control

Great thread! I'm pretty new to gambling, so I don't have much experience and knowledge. Recently I've been lucky to find a good source that provided me with all necessary information about different casinos - Gambl Sites. But I need to improve my skills, so I'm sure the links and info given here will be useful for me. Thanks for sharing!

Back when I lived in Vegas me and a buddy hit the craps table at Hard Rock one Friday. One of the first times I had ever played craps. Anyway I got on a roll and couldn't lose. Seemed like forever, but probably 15-20 minutes. After a while they were 3 deep around the table cheering and clapping, some betting against me of course, but man that was fun. Just some dumb luck.

How many times have I been at a hot table, betting small, when guys all around were racking many many green and even black... But then it almost always happened, table went cold. Seven out after seven out. They kept betting $54 across or even more, come wi/ double odds,, all the hardways, etc, etc. And those sweet double and triple racks of greens kept dropping and dropping. I don't win much at craps, but I don't lose much either. And I get "free" drinks! Well, you got to tip a little, or the cocktail gal will kind of "forget" about you... :D

I'm not one to go to casinos, but If I do go, I don't mind giving away some money to play craps. I've read about dice mechanics and dice control and think it's possible but very difficult to master unless you have a ton of time on your hands.

Well last night was something I don't think i've ever seen in my life. The guys who typically shoot at this place are terrible. The type that love to shake the dice, blow on them, and then hammer them into the back of the wall as if it were some type of competition to see who can dent the diamond bumpers.

Anyways, this shooter next to the stickman came out and hit 7 off the bat then threw a 5 to set the point. Took him about 4 rolls to nail the 5. I thought nothing of it. Then he comes out again with a 9. He hit about three 6's, two 5's, a couple 10's and then bam another 9. Meanwhile he's betting like a jackass. $10 on the pass line and no odds. At that point i'm out for a quick bathroom break thinking he's just finished up his decent little run. I come back a minute later and as im walking up he hits the 8 he set. After this, his whips a wad of $1500 in chips out of his pocket and starts putting $150-$200 bets on only the pass line.

By then I started to take some notes on his throwing. He had a few illegal throws that didn't get called but would methodically tap the bottom of the back wall. He also stood right next to the stickman (as mentioned) and he'd also stack the dice one on top of another (instead of the typical side to side) before throwing. 4 was always on the bottom with either a 1 or a 3 on top when shooting for the point. To come out, 1 was on the bottom with 2 on top. He'd also twist the dice so that'd they'd be facing a certain way (didn't catch which numbers where facing the wall). I really wish I had checked his grip too. He goes on a run for about another 50+ minutes and finished up probably around $800-1,000. Aside from the nonsensical betting I hadn't seen anything like it. His favorite number turned into 9 and could hit them without a problem.

Now looking back he had all the hallmarks of a good dice mechanic. Positioned right next to the stick man, set the dice, angle looked fairly uniform, and would lightly brush the back wall. However if he knew what he was doing, his betting sure didn't show it. But aside from that it pretty much textbook.

Either way it was fun and I took away that he was either extremely lucky (and threw in almost text book form) and didn't know it, OR he was a ringer. Regardless, it was one of the coolest things i'd ever seen. I'm sure there's plenty of stories of some random in Vegas going on a tear, but this was the first time i'd seen something like this.

Just curious if anyone else had any experience with, or ever run into a dice mechanic.

Never ran into a dice mechanic but, at the California Casino in downtown Las Vegas, they had a picture of a Japanese guy who held the dice for 4 hours. The casino was obviously, promoting it because the guy and his friends supposedly, won like over $200,000 during that time. Don't know if the guy is still alive and playing. Anyway, it is a good story. If you are anywhere in the downtown area of Las Vegas, check the California Casino and see if the picture and article is still there. I do not work for any of the casinos just to set the record straight but, did find the photo and article interesting!

When in town that’s the only game I gyrate to. I play poker here regularly but not much when in Vegas b/c we don’t have craps here. Love it when the roll is on and everyone is hi fiving

4 hrs? That's an epic roll. Glad I wasn't there betting Don't!

At the time, I wished I was at that table to place a few bets. Would have been quite an experience for sure! Atleast, his friends had an experience of a lifetime and won lots of monies!
California Casino then, catered to Japanese tourists from Hawaii. They probably, still do but, I was there a long while, ago. Not sure if the picture of the dice master and article is still on the wall.

I still say the craps table is well worth the price of admission just for the entertainment. Some of the craziest stuff I've witnessed. Four box cars in a row from four different shooters, and some dude betting them all four times with a greenie. One shooter throws hard six, followed by hard eight, hard six, hard eight, hard six, hard eight again. The table was nuts. Saw another guy all decked out in some 1920's gangsta attire, expensive looking clothes, chomping on a big old cigar. Loses 10K in about 15 minutes betting all the hard ways. Everyone waiting for this guy to go ballistic. He shrugs his shoulders, easy come, easy go. Haven't been in awhile, now I got the bug thanks to this thread revisited.

Sorry for posting on an old thread but since it was resurrected after a year in January, I say why not?

Just like some of you, I've seen some crazy rolls, and I've had long runs myself, one time the dealer noted I shot for 52 minutes (i guess he has to time it maybe part of the work, or he's bored and does it to entertain himself) but there's a caveat to long runs, I myself take a few seconds to dice set to the one I'm using at the time (whatever gave me an outside number at the come out roll) and then I take my time trying to hit the same spot and same angle across the table before i roll.

Here's my opinion on why dice control does not always work, but sometimes, it seems to work quite well. There's a factor of the dice pair itself. You'll hear many times, when a person has been rolling for a while and one of the dice goes off the table, they'll request same dice as it's the one with the proper weight and corners and such that goes along with the other dice.

I've seen young guys throw for a long time, seem inexperienced, not even dice setting, and then something disturbs their concentration like a friend arrives and next roll is 7 out.

The most impressive run I've seen, and this is quantified because the table has repeater bets (you can look them up) this shooter hit 6 repeater bets per the dealer, some of them were repeater 6 and 8, we tried to get in, but he sevened out without hitting the repeater we got on (repeater 6 and 8 have to be rolled 6 times each without hitting a 7 even at the come out roll). He and his buddy had $5 each repeater number (so $10) and for perspectives, repeater 6 or 8 pays 90 to 1 and repeater 2 or 12 pay 40 to 1 (but 2 and 12 only needs to be hit twice each).

TL;DR, dice control is a combination of the proper dice and proper mood and once they match, the shooter is in the zone where 7 that is the most common number does not seem to hit but other numbers do, imho.
