I just assume that all the "big boys" have it all implemented directly in custom/specialized silicon chips installed in racks at the exchanges .... No need for c++ anymore

And have been commoditized. Several vendors now offer plug/play solutions. Instant HFT!

Plug and play hft? I don't think so. Plug and play relatively low latency generic platform more like it.
