Covid Relief and Stimulus package 3.0

The Senate has begun debate on the reconciliation process for a proposed $1.9 trillion (with a T) third Covid relief and economic stimulus package.

This is a massive, massive supplemental spending bill. The only supplemental spending bill larger than this bill is the $2.4 trillion tax cut package Republicans passed in 2017.

Let’s see where this ends up though. Big, big politics on the dem side around Manchin and Sinema (sp) that include eligibility for stimulus checks and the proposed increase to a $15 an hour minimum wage.

The dogs bark but the caravan moves on. Democrats are moving very smartly with this and not letting republicans dangle support over their heads for weeks. The policies are popular and they have the votes. Republicans in congress can get involved but there is a time limit and they need to move if they want to have some of their ideas incorporated.

Mitt Romney is proposing an interesting idea to reform the child tax credit into an allowance paid through social security monthly. This is innovative stuff and would eliminate TANF (that’s the old welfare program we’re all familiar with) altogether. I have to say this is definitely an improvement to existing ideas. He is currently working to get this into Biden’s Covid package and I think he might get it done.

He may but I have to say that I think it’s a really good idea. Some families, mostly at the lower income level, don’t get the child tax credit for one reason or another, this would ensure 90% of all families receive a benefit. Within a year this would cut child poverty by more than a third.

Look more into it, I think it’s a really smart idea.

You better take a close look at how families in poverty (most are single parent) spend their child care credit. A large percentage (over 20%) do not spend the money for the benefit of the children but on drugs and/or alcohol. There really needs to be some mechanisms in place to ensure that money provided as a child care credit are spent for the benefit of the children. At least with EBT (Food Stamps) there is a good probability that the money is being spent on food via the EBT cards.

This is probably the worst take I could imagine. Most working family get the child tax credit. The purpose is not to spend the money directly on children it is to offset the money spent on children - that includes things like food clothing and shelter. The way you judge this stuff, by stereotyping people, is awful and doesn’t even make sense.
