We have been saying ALL along that non-socially distanced outdoor crowds not wearing masks is the problem -- NEVER have we pushed that there is spread from casual outdoor interactions of individuals who are socially distanced.

Even prior to that religious gathering... contact tracing in India found that travel is one of the major places for spread outside the home. (they are very crowded there.)

Obviously the events all occurred outdoors -- and clearly led to a documented surge in cases in India. Most people did not travel very far for these political rallies and religious events -- the spread is all within local communities or cities. It should be noted that regions of the country which did not hold large rallies have not endured a surge yet (but they are worried it may be coming).
