We should wait till the covid virus is completely gone and then start to count numbers. Only the final result counts and different countries are in different phases of the pandemic.
In cycling, care races, running, the winner is the one who crosses the first the finish line. Their position before the finishline is irrelevant. In the case of Covid the loser will have the highest numbers. With half a million new cases a week (+40 % over the previous week) the US is trying to get in pole position.

And Trump is telling already months that covid will soon be gone. In that period more US citizens are gone (death) and more virus has come.

If we take all cause deaths, to avoid manipulation of COVID or not COVID, the USA is in third position. The higher the worse.

So don't tell that USA is better than the rest of the world. USA is even not better than all Europe.

The COVID death rates in both the U.S. and Europe have been reduced since spring. The global CFR (Case Fatality Rate) is down to approximately 3% from 5.4%. In western countries the CFR has dropped to around 2% or below.

This lower death rate is primarily due to better known medical treatments for COVID and an increasing number of younger people among the infected. On the treatment front the use of steroids, drug therapies proven to be medically effective, reducing the intubations when possible and simple things such as positioning of the patient --- have all improved the survival rate.

Short answer: The virus is not less deadly - treatments are better and younger people are patients.

However if hospitals get overwhelmed in our new wave -- then the death rate can easily spike again.
