To clean this up, the FDA responded that no drug is approved for the treatment of Covid.
However, doctors can use any fda approved drug “off label.” Meaning the drug is tested and approved for other illnesses and because its safety and side effects are known doctors can use it for illnesses not approved for use. This is already the law. Trump didn’t do anything.
What they are doing is ramping up production, which is a good thing.
I think the hospitalization numbers are what is crucial to getting as close to an accurate idea of what the infection rate is. We can reverse engineer those numbers by a multiple of five or ten and have a decent idea of infection rate.
This is still imperfect because hospitals are already sending home people that should be hospitalized under normal circumstances.

I heard Dr. Faucia who is a great member of the task force shoot down those medications Trump touted because it would create a run on them and they are used for real treatments of other conditions. Most people are cured with available medicine. The issue is not that it is incurable..it is the drain on resources it causes and NYC said they will be out of supplies soon.

This is encouraging news even if Trump’s verbiage was incorrect. The fact that the medical community here is awakened to the fact that this treatment is available is a step in the right direction. What we will find is there will be a shortage of these drugs. Why? They’re cheat and pharmaceuticals can’t charge enough to produce them when they’re busy focusing on new experimental drugs.
Hence we’re forced to rely on other countries for supply.
Trump didn’t put us in this upcoming supply shortage. Years of Corporate controlled bureaucracy will soon bite us in the ass.

that is why he should shut the fuck up and let the experts speak. Why does the FDA have to come up to the mic and then walk back what was said for a more realistic picture. This is the problem with leadership he has, not letting anyone else with more knowledge get their moment and wanting to show he knows it all.
He created a task force and put howdy doody in charge but let the doctors and medical experts speak and just introduce him. He just needs to be the MC and STFU.

I’ll try and dig up the report, think it’s in the health and fitness threads, the effect of hydroxylchloriquin stays in the body for 10-14 days after treatment. That’s effectively an immunization for Medical/first responders at this point in time until a permanent vaccine can be found.
There’s ample trial data already showing how effective this drug works on covid-19. We need, now, to seriously ramp up production here. But that will require Congress/White House to force the issue on our pharma companies to comply.
The other bonus coming from this, it’s probably works just as well on other viruses.
Yeh well, those points about approving/not approving/off label etc are valid but if you want to put a finer point on it, there are enormous legal implications for companies who are gearing up to manufacture more quinilone based drugs. The FDA now has knowledge and is complicit in that effort. While it is true that an individual physician can prescribe drugs off label for a non-standard use, it has its limits if physicians and drug companies go too far afield. The FDA can shut down widespread operations that are built upon lack of science versus a private decision between a doctor and a patient.
So I am going to rate your points as MOSTLY TRUE, but rate your assertion that nothing really different has happened as MOSTLY FALSE.
The FDA is saying now "I see what you guys are up to in advance and I am going to allow it." In the world of pharmaceuticals where you have government and private lawsuits up the ying yang that is something that the companies look for bigtime before gearing up to enter a field.
What Doc is going to climb out on a limb and prescribe off label for something that has never been used or tested? Law Suit!!
The FDA doesn’t have to approve, just the fact that they acknowledge the merits of the drug in specific off labeled use is headed in the right direction and helps Doctors.
