After Winning Gold, USA Swimmer Slams Russia in Greatest Way Possible: ‘We Can Still Compete Clean’
by J.D. Durkin | August 9th, 2016

It was a dramatic ending two days in the making.

On Sunday night, USA’s Lilly King — the 19-year-old upstart darling on the swimming team — was caught on camera shaking a finger at Yulia Efimova, the Russian-born swimmer who has tested positive for performance enhancing drugs… twice. Efimova, 24, has been a force on the global stage to be sure, and despite prior disqualifications and the looming ban on Russian athletes for similar offenses in the Olympics, Efimova was allowed to compete.

Speaking to NBC’s Michele Tafoya, King said Sunday, “[Y]ou’ve been caught for drug-cheating. I’m just not a fan,” setting the stage for Monday night’s Women’s 100m Breaststroke final that would pin the two head-to-head:

People were shocked by King’s bravado, but as she revealed, “That’s just my personality. I’m not this sweet little girl, that’s not who I am. If I do need to stir it up to put a little fire under my butt or anybody else then that’s what I’m going to do.”

And boy did she ever.

On Monday night, Lilly King set an Olympic Record in that Finals, finishing in 1:04.93.

Efimova finished in second place in 1:05:50.

Admittedly, Tafoya pushed the subject on the 19-year-old, but she didn’t back down. “Do you feel like you made a statement for the United States and other athletes?” regarding the Efimova battle.

King, who was joined by her teammate Katie Meili who won the bronze, replied immediately, “Yeah, I hope I did, that we can still compete clean and do well at the Olympic games and that’s how it should be.”

Sorry Putin… U-S-A! U-S-A! U-S-A!

Police: Man, 91, shoots suspected robber in Eastpointe

A 91-year-old concealed pistol license holder shot a man who was attempting to rob him Monday in Eastpointe, according to police.

The victim was exiting his car around 10:15 a.m. and heading into the Rite Aid on Gratiot near Nine Mile when an unknown suspect in his late 20s approached, Sgt. Martin Campbell said.

“He attempted to rob (the victim) and (the victim) had a CPL and ended up shooting the suspect,” Campbell said. “It’s as simple as that.”

The would-be robber was struck in the neck and fled across Gratiot, where he was arrested by responding officers.

“Two detectives found him walking over there,” Campbell said. “He had a gunshot wound to the neck but he was talking and acting erratic.”

The erratic behavior initially prompted alarm bells for his intended target, Campbell said.

“The suspect approached and began to act erratic. (The victim) told him he had a gun, he warned him three or four times and even had the gun pointed at him,” Campbell said. “But the suspect kept coming and pointed an unknown object at the victim.”

At that point, the victim opened fire, Campbell said.

The CPL holder went to the Eastpointe police station following the incident to give his statement, Campbell said. He is cooperating with authorities, who currently are treating the incident as self-defense.

“Nothing’s ever clear cut but that’s what we’re calling it right now: an attempted robbery shooting,” Campbell said.

The suspect remained hospitalized Monday and in police custody.

Surprise: Gun ownership rises to 44% of all homes

By PAUL BEDARD

After a steady decline in gun ownership in recent years, more homes are reporting having a weapon inside, according to a new survey.

Pew Research Center, in a poll on guns released Friday, showed that 44 percent of the country has a gun in the house. Some 51 percent don't.

The survey firm didn't break those numbers out for special attention in reviewing American attitudes about background checks, an assault weapon ban or other gun issues, but it shows a jump in ownership from the mid-30 percent found in other recent polls.

Ex-Rangers coach John Tortorella warns Team USA: Stand for the anthem or sit out the World Cup of Hockey

The land of the free may soon become the home of the benched.

Team USA skaters who follow in Colin Kaepernick’s footsteps by sitting out “The Star-Spangled Banner” will ride the bench under head coach John Tortorella at this month’s World Cup of Hockey.

Tortorella, the fiery former Rangers coach who is leading the U.S. squad during the two-week tournament in Toronto, told ESPN on Tuesday that players who take a seat during the national anthem can forget about representing their country on the ice.

“If any of my players sit on the bench for the national anthem, they will sit there the rest of the game,” Tortorella said.
