Convalescent Plasma Emergency Authorization (not approved)

Although its not "approved"...it now has "emergency authorization" for treatment of severely sick Covid-19 patients.

This works best in the first several days of infection with Covid-19. Therefore, I'm a little confused about why this almost 100 year old treatment will be successful on Covid-19 patients that have typically been infected beyond that first 3 days of infection.

I myself had a deadly sepsis pneumonia infection in 2016 that resulted in lapsing into a 2 month coma.

After I came out of the coma the doctor did a quick review with me about the treatments I was given when I was in the coma...
  • One of them was convalescent plasma treatment on day 5. He said it did not work because it was too late because he suspected I had walking pneumonia for several weeks before I became so sick when I collapsed in the waiting room at the hospital.
Essentially, had I been hospitalized a few days earlier, it may have had a better treatment outcome and prevented the coma and other life saving therapeutics.

Fast forward, Covid-19 hits the world and its one of the highly talked about therapeutics back in April because it was successfully used in other illness from patients that survived a disease and now giving their plasma with anti-bodies to a new ill patient.

Hopefully, President Trump didn't pressure the FDA into the "emergency authorization" considering he was unable to pressure them into an "approved status".

Yes, my heart stopped twice within a 5 day period after the treatment while I was in a coma. :(

I survived because I was not a smoker, not diabetic, had no prior cardiovascular diseases, not over-weight, no cholesterol problem and no other underlying medical condition and in extreme physical athletic condition.

Those were the reasons why the other therapeutic treatments worked plus prayer from my elders.

Did the doctor properly identify the cause of your pneumonia? If your pneu was caused by bacteria, then antibodies would do nothing for you. If you had viral pneu, then antibiotics would not work for you.

You can't cure the disease by killing the patient with incorrect therapeutics.

Should sue your doctor for malpractice.

A family member of mine contracted sepsis in the hospital after a motorcycle accident. He died fairly quick. Why? Probably because they didn't know WTF they were doing. So when the autopsy came back and showed severe blood infection (sepsis), the docs most likely just jotted it down in their little notebooks and nodded their heads in agreement. (We'll try to remember that next time. Now where's our 6-figure insurance check payment for the "treatment")?

Yeah, it was properly identified apparently on day 3 and antibiotics did eventually work for me but after the Convalescent Plasma did not work because I enter the hospital too late for Convalescent Plasma to be effective.

In hindsight...I'm guessing I had the walking pneumonia for about 3 weeks prior to developing my first fever. It was the fever that prompt me to go to the hospital a few hours after I developed the fever although when I arrived...the pre-check nurse took my temperature and the fever was no longer there.

I got my ticket number and sat down in the lobby and waited for my appointment to see a doctor.

That's where I fainted...blood pressure dropped too low and too fast. Woke up about 2 months later in a different hospital and in a different country.

Pneumonia is one thing but sepsis by any disease is typically deadly. More children and elderly die from Pneumonia (sepsis) every year than any other sepsis disease.

Getting back to Covid-19...many Covid-19 patients that eventually that were hospitalized occurred typically after Day 7 of infection...that's too late for Convalescent Plasma to be effective.
  • The key I'm pointing out is that there's a small window for Convalescent Plasma to be effective and if a patient becomes Covid-19 positive and doesn't know how long they've been infected prior to hospitalization considering Covid-19 has an unusual length of development in symptoms before it prompts someone to go see a doctor.
In contrast, other diseases like the Flu has a shorter infection window before the first symptoms show up plus the Flu has a much smaller R0 than Covid-19.

This is something many people do not understand about these therapeutics is that there's a window for them to be effective. If you wait too long because you didn't know you were infected or you had mild symptoms so mild that it doesn't prompt you to go see a doctor...

You're dangerous not just to yourself but to others because someone else you may infect may have an underlying medical condition in which these diseases can exploit and wreck havoc or worst on the body.

Of course his "breakthrough" is just making political capital our of thin air the day his sister's damning recordings are released. Nothing to think about further.

It has already been given to over 70k patients and more around the world and as was said, a 100 year old therapy already being used. Little chance of his 35 percent number, just his lying.

One observation on blood plasma is it is what the "stem cell" clinics inject (not stem cells) and undoubtedly can bring significant short term anti-inflammatory effect, even healing to joint tissue.

Perhaps it helps in this way also?
