Contig defrag problem

used Contig for some time but, a defrag, shut down and when
i restarted the desktop appeared similar to windows first install
a few program shortcuts were there, many missing and all folders
pdfs etc had gone. restore didn't work but i used search, found
folders and was able to copy files updated since my last backup,
ended up formatting and reinstalling everything

anyone know what might have happened ?

any recommendations for a free defragger ?
 
I baulk at endorsing paid for software on a public forum but I will on this matter. Raxco is the product if you must spend money
