If formal study involves a review of the success socialism had in eastern european countries the ussr, central and south america and china until it became more capitalist... then I would expect him to be a liberatarian and conservative by 21.
Certainly if he had a chance to travel back in time eastern block countries or say spend a month in yugoslavia or even current central america and see strong central govt planning does for a country, he could become a small govt, low tax type withing a few days.
nothing like seeing 12 guys doing the work of one 14 year old to know how destructive big govt can be.
