Conn. Failed To Pass Mental Health Bill

As the national discussion on mental health continues following the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School that killed 27 people, a recent mental health bill that was defeated in Connecticut may have helped in keeping Adam Lanza away.

Before Friday’s heinous act, there was talk in Connecticut’s state legislature to beef up the state’s “assisted outpatient treatment” law, according to Breitbart.com. Connecticut Senate Bill 452 was proposed in February “to enhance the care and treatment of persons with psychiatric disabilities in both inpatient and outpatient settings.” But the bill was defeated in March, with opposition calling it “outrageously discriminatory.” The ACLU said the bill would “infringe on patients’ privacy rights by expanding [the circle of] who can medicate individuals without their consent.”

Had the AOT bill been passed, it would have given the state the right to institutionalize a person who is mentally ill for treatment if the state has enough evidence to believe that the person could be a danger to himself or the community.

His mom sounds like a bit of a nut herself. She might not have committed her son even if he was clearly very ill.

I read she was an end-of-the-world type "prepper". Her son was self-mutilating, burning himself with a lighter repeatedly. If she didn't seek help at that point she may not have been willing to get help at all.

She had a collection of guns but they weren't secured properly (the son gain access to them somehow). She prevented her friends from coming inside her house. She took her son out of highschool and home-schooled him. Its unusual.

She was odd. It seems she had hundreds of thousands yearly coming in in alimony so she didn't have to work or conform to society. The ex was some big wig tax guy at GE.
There are a lot of odd people in the world. Howard Hughes was a germaphobe. You never know what is going to set one of them off. If it weren't for the crazies and the thieves we wouldn't need police.

He went to grade school at the school and he had some sort of altercation there a few days ago. Why he would be there and what the altercation was, nobody has said yet.

I can't comprehend how someone could start killing young kids for any reason. I just can't imagine how they could get past their conscience to be able to do that.

There is no conscience in cases like this.

The shooter in the Aurora theater shared the same trait - emotional detachment.

Simply put - A lack of empathy.

Me neither. My gf is pretty upset and I've had to convince her to not watch the memorial services or the news. She has an 8 year old and identifies with what happened a bit strongly.

Kids are innocent so there is no sense to be made of it.

All the discussion about what to do may not amount to anything in the end.

Other than set up more protections at schools there isn't much that can be done. They won't get an assault weapons ban passed unless the House should go Democratic in two years. Besides, it seems he used pistols and left the AR-15 in the car.

I've stopped watching the news coverage, too. It's gone way past overload. It's time for the news to move on to something less disturbing.
 
I have been forcing my wife to turn it off.
She just starts crying every time they talk about kids or show the parents.

We have a first grader... and she just keeps think what if he was killed.
I jokingly keep telling her he is a soccer and video game player (he has older brothers) so he have have kicked him in the shin and ran for cover.

Actually, it is when people become desensitized to such things that you have to become concerned....

I feel it when I see it the dads talking about their kids.
And there is something compelling about watching a tragedy.
But when I can't fix it... I soon turn it off.
Why depress yourself if you can't use the emotion to make changes.
