Computer Slowdown

Quote from def:

Java is fine. Note he says his IB TWS is working fine and he only has 256K of memory. these days it's hard to run a decent spreadsheet with only 256K of memory. Memory is cheap, it's easy to install and the performance boost you'll get by going to 1gig+ will prove most worthwhile.

Sorry, but the facts are that with more than a few one minute IB TWS Java charts open, IB TWS Java pegs my CPU resources. However with Medved QT charts, one dozen 1 minute charts using IB feed run the CPU at only about 10- 15%. (Intel 2.4 Mhz, 1 gig ram). The only conclusion one can reach is that IB TWS Java charts are resource hogs. These are the plain simple facts with my computer.

I'll agree with that. The Charts are another story. They use open source java code which isn't as efficient as the TWS.

whoops, thanks for the correction.

I think in the case of the orginal poster who stated
"I have a 2.4 G Intel processor, 256m of RAM" a boost in memory will bring vast improvements to many of his applications and solve his current problem.

No prob.

Yes, I agree 256 Mb of RAM is not sufficient to run XP, there was a big jump in performance when I initially went to 384Mb, after that perfromance increase tailored of and above 768 it started to drop.

I do think that most posters here on ET would benefit from a bit higher memory than I am using - I have turned off (I think) all services that could be turned off ("lean and mean"), every single CPU cycle saved helps.

vital statistics

Java is quite memory consuming. Makes me question why IB hasn't upgraded to a Windows application and then add for Mac & Linux as well.
Many indeed question this. I'm affraid it's the tail wagging the dog.

HE'S RIGHT !

RE: DEF

NO JAVA IS NOT FINE . TWS IS A MONSTER RESOURCE HOG !!! AND YOU ARE TELLING PEOPLE WHAT THE HECK JUST UPGRADE !

WHY SHOULD ONE UPGRADE THEIR PC JUST BECAUSE OF TWS ?

Adding a stick of memory isn't much of an upgrade.... besides, he needs it in general and it should help his problem.

Kicking, tell me how many applications can you expect to run on a PC these days with only 256 Mb of RAM? An open browser, email and anti-virus software might chew up most of that alone.

Gnome, I changed my page file size. I haven't really noticed any difference. Thanks for the tip though. Looks like more RAM is my easiest solution.

Thanks to all who replied.

I originally suggestd adding 512 RAM... that would give you 768 and should be plenty for trading. However, there are often deals on 1GB kits (2x512)... one of those might be about the same as the regular price of a single 512 stick.

not true , 256 MB still works OK for a back up PC for ex. especially if you are not using XP (which I don't) . May I remind you that some laptops still come off the shelf with 256MB?

The point is not how much memory you need it's that within 2 years TWS users will need 2 GB to run it properly !
