I've successfully used a free, make-your-own BartPE bootable CD to transfer files from a failed, no longer recognized internal HD to an external USB HD.

yeah, I replaced the heatsink/fan also. CPU went from running at about 36* to running at 28*. Those stock fans are pretty weak.
