Company is Banning Trading from Work?

Quote from jinxu:

hmmm....are you a successful trader.

you should learn how to ask the right questions. your question shows an inability to discern what is relevant or not.

Quote from jinxu:

This is a company that recently fired 5 long term workers here because they were making too much money for the same type of work that newer ones are doing. I don't think my attitude about the company is ludicrous.

Furthermore, Do you even work? At my job, everyone on my team is spending half their time on Facebook, Phone, Text messaging, and Internet.

If they ban laptops, could you trade off a tablet or phone and look like everyone else? Maybe it's just a matter of fitting in, your coworkers complain to the boss, not you, and instead of talking to you directly, the best idea your boss can come up with is indirectly deal with the problem, and ban your laptop. Passive aggressive management style is bad, an example another sign of it would be sticky notes all over.

Other than that, I tend to agree with Swan Noir, it's like customer service. If your service (eg Internet, broker, cable, wireless) is terrible, do you want to pay for it or continue the plan? Similarly, the boss pays you not just for work but also so the office runs smoothly. If you're giving her a headache instead of good service, she would not want to pay for it or for you to come back.

But I really don't know, I'm not there to see or deal with things directly for myself, I hope things work out.

Well said.

jinxu, put yourself as the business owner, you will expect the same from your employees. You pay them to do work that generate revenue/profit for the company. They don't pay you to hang out doing something that benefit yourself.

If you dont like it, they are please to show your the door.

Quote from Swan Noir:

I spent my entire career as a business owner and now I trade so I start with a bias. My point is that you have contracted to do a job from, lets say 9 to 5. Whether you like how they hire and fire or whether others are abusing their contracts is not relevant to yours. As long as you are there, my opinion is, you have an oligation to fulfill your end of the bargain.

What sacrifice?

What? If you have to keep monitoring your auto program. Doesn't that defeat the purpose of automation?

the sacrifice is the time on the the learning curve to becoming a trader when you are earning nil.

the auto program is the tool to find more trading opportunities and to enter orders more quickly.

I used to carry my laptop to work as well, it hasnt been banned, but this is what i do now since I just dont everyone looking at my screens...

I purchased in Q4CY13 a Lenovo Thinkpad 2 Windows 8 Based Tablet... I watched it until it was $250 or so... it was an awesome deal...

http://outlet.lenovo.com/SEUILibrar...nu_area=true&GroupID=445&Code=R9ZF5ZD-3679CTR

I removed all the junk I didnt care for and use a few things to tweak the interface to make it look like windows 7, which I prefer though windows8.1 is much faster (I just hate the metro interface)...

I just lay it flat in front of me, and no-one sees it... it has built in 4LTE so I am able to share my data plan with cell phone, but word of advise... I had to bump my data plan to 10GB... 5GB went through really fast in 15 days...

I tried all other tablets (iPAD/Samsung/etc)... while iOS and Android are lighter... I cant run CQG or other apps on it... I can RDP to my server near the exchange, and that works as well... but at times that is annoying when it comes to the resolution of the device...

dont take me wrong, I still use the TP Tablet2 to RDP to my server, but I am not obligated to do so... I like having the option to do so now... to work on the tablet or remote on the server..

just a thought..

PS... while I day trade... I am not trading tick charts or anything that moves super fast anyhow... so your mileage will vary with what I stated.

Quote from jinxu:

I got an email recently that people are no longer allowed to bring laptops to work. It's an obvious response to my boss catching me on my laptop and assuming I'm not working when in reality I was using a few seconds to glance at the charts. But I don't think I can argue this.

Technically, I don't need the job but it helps pass the time and alleviate some of the pressure to make money for rent and bills. In response I'm now considering quitting as my job is during trading hours and I've missed some good moves due to the job too.

I could try swing trading as an alternative.

So, does everyone think it's time to quit? Or maybe switch to swing trading? What other ideas are there that I can do?

Also, my boss is female. Don't know if that's important. Just mentioning it.

Also, it's a small company with no opportunities to move up.

Quote from jinxu:

Barely an hour but the rest of the time I just need to watch it. I doubt they'll allow that. Things are busy and they won't allow reducing work hours as "it's not fair to everyone else."

Speaking of goldbrickers. Everyone in the office already know I'm trading, but no one has bother to ask about it or even ask what I'm doing. Why do you think that is? Is it because they are trap in their jobs? They are in jobs that's in a tight industry. Just asking what their point of view is.

Also, if you really think I'm a goldbricker. I've been here for 3 years with no pay raise and no vacations. Who do you think is being exploited here?

Well, either you're getting vacation pay and not traveling, or you're not getting vacations per your employment contract, which would be very odd. You don't think they can hire someone cheaper who will devote their work hours to their work?

Per ofthomas; get an ipad mini or android tablet with LTE and remote to your home machine. Worst case is you lose your job, but it will look bad if you even need the employer's reco.

I actually have the Asus T100 Tablet with a dock:

http://www.amazon.com/Transformer-T100TA-C1-GR-10-1-Inch-Detachable-Touchscreen/dp/B00FFJ0HUE

I'm surprised I could trade off a 10" screen but it's doable and there are people here that "need" a 24" inch screen to trade.

Yeah I do understand it from the employer's point of view. But it's not a job I care for anymore. So from the employee point of view the intent is to do the least work possible. The employer can try to extract the maximum amount of work from the employee as they can bu the employee will always try to do as little work as they can. That has been my experience around the office.

About what Zed said just made me think about this. The reality is the whole things don't make sense. There were two girls a couple weeks back that brought their laptop to play video games while working yet they didn't get fired or the boss didn't ban laptops. Despite some complaints. One were from me. So it doesn't make sense why it would be ban when it's just me trading. Maybe I'm being paranoid, but I think my co-workers don't like the fact that I could be making more money then them. Just a thought.

The company is hiring everyone new on contract. That's why there is no vacation.
