Companies stock buy backs...How can you tell they are doing it??

Friday night...Markets closed. Thought I (we) could get a thread going on how to tell whether a company is really buying back their stock. I know in the quarterly they will say "they are authorized" to buy back a certain amount $ of stock. But during this time, you never know till the next quarter what has happened. Any indicators that we can truly see...Any insight??

Was still thinking of Apple sitting on all that cash. For years we would wonder..."is this the quarter/year they buy back (big time) some of their stock"?? Thoughts...
 
IMO, company buying their own stock is not an efficient way to use capital or cash, buying stock does not nothing for the company other than enriched insiders and ceo with in the money options or keep stock from hitting the open market
 
Great question..

I've also read that a significant percentage of stock market gains are from share-buy backs. That its at all time highs.

But how can one know this? What indicator/statistic do you look at?
