Commissions - are these standard?

Well, there is nothing like a standard commission charge in forex. Just like everyone said, your commission is going to vary as per the broker you select.
For low commission charges, here are some brokers that I would suggest:

Fxview - $2/lot RT
HYCM - $4/lot RT
FXTM - $4/lot RT
Forex.com - $5/lot RT
 
There is no need to be afraid of commissions if the broker is reliable and safe, and he will openly and honestly warn you about these moments.
