Coming to terms with my feelings. Long, sorry.

Quote from Ricter:

Let's say I'm government and you're the public. Of that $16 trillion, I owe you about $11 trillion. Pay your taxes and I'll be able to pay you. You won't get it all at once, but you knew that, since the notes you bought have various redemption dates. In the meantime, my income is 5x what it needs to be to pay your interest as well as the remaining interest.

Now, for the remaining $5 trillion. About $1 trillion of that is intra-governmental, so shuffling, today a liability, tomorrow an asset. Etc.

Finally, $4 trillion owed to foreigners. As with the first $11 trillion, it's not all due at once. Unlike the first $11 trillion, it's not all owed to one entity (for the purpose of this analogy), so it's not going to be called in at once. But let's suppose in some alternate universe all those foreign entities around the world, public and private, organize themselves and call it all in at once. Ok, we call in all at once our own foreign investments, public and private, which account for 90% of what they're due.

So, what's this drivel all mean, brother Riccie?
You are okay with a 16 trillion dollar debt?

I have family members feeling the way.
My wife wants to move...
her parents left Holland to escape this attitude and they
are just besides themselves right now.

I still have hope for the swing back in 4 years.
But, the other rational response is be the elite. be the crony or work to change things or people.

or

Elevate your game... get a regional audience.
No reason to be down.
Enjoy the challenge.
The people need leaders.

By the way... great Yoda quote.
Almost up there with his... do or do not there is no try quote.
This quote kills my kids... because they love star wars.

"Drivel" is another way of saying you don't understand.

Let me simplify it still more. I owe you $11 trillion. You owe me $11 trillion.

Quote from TGregg:

I used to worry about the debt, but the reality is every new generation is more liberal and more about big government than the previous one. So #@&^ `em, #@&^ `em up the @$$. Let's run this puppy up to a quadrillion and leave `em broke, starving, homeless and shivering cold so I can have Maker's Mark instead of Jim Beam. :D

Nothing wrong with this plan at all. Where do I sign up?

Just curious, but at what point do declining revenues and increasing debt/liabilities (or even interest rates) become an issue?

Quote from budcampbell:

A point that has not been touched upon here is how the Obama camp shrewdly targeted women voters.

If women are stupid enough to believe the crap shoveled to them, then that's on them not Obama. You can't blame Obama for playing the game.

Tsing,

Brilliant OP. A lot of us feel that way to an extent.

I live in Washington, DC, and thus have little choice but to associate with many of the vilest liberals you can imagine. You just have to learn to compartmentalize. Don't get into political discussions with them. It is pointless. Fly under their radar.

I was concerned about your comment about cutting off your immediate family. My advice is rise above it. They are your parents, not some dolts you work with. Gently try to change their minds, if possible, but don't abandon them over a silly vote that didn't change anything. As you noted, they have no real idea why they voted that way. It's noit like they decided to be evil.

If you do cut them off, you're handing a victory to all the liars in the media and the democrat hate machine that flood the airwaves with this propaganda.
