College Is Not An Option

now sure what has transpired in these pages but things I wish my dad did.. that he didn't

-follow and encourage my interest
-even know my interests and passions
-allow me the space, time, money to pursue these interests
-encourage failure
-teach me to get excited by challenges
-the journey is the fun, because the destination lasts one second

seriously though, if you want your kid to define success by what he makes and the title he says he does ( which is not WHO he is.. ) then that is failure in my eyes. Im not even sure if you do, but this is 99% of Americans as evidence by wanting them to be a doctor or Lawyer or something that makes mega money... if you are at work 8+ hours a day, shouldn't you LOVE what you do, be excited by it, endless life long learning, fulfills your spirit.. because sitting in a mansion with the trophy wife being miserable is what comes when you have a job you don't love, or your main goal was money and you actually achieved it.

the highest level things are always simple.. we are all programmed with what we love to do inside, it just needs to be expressed and nurtured in various ways. Ans you won't like this as if you were raising him right you would have followed the child and this discussion wouldn't need to take place, he would have automatically persued what he was interested in, instead of mom and dad throwing out ideas to him. "go do this, don't you like that, this sounds interesting, oh this helps people, wow that seems like a good fit... ... .... "

Great post above! @vanzandt

If your kid doesn’t know what their passion is encourage world travel. It’ll ground how good they have it now as well as an appreciation for how other cultures approach problems.

Also, sometimes it takes working sucky deadend jobs to gain clarity.

Putting up a stake seems supportive. It’ll be more effective if it’s sourced from within them. Otherwise they will be doing whatever it is to please you. That includes any ideas you give them.

With all that said,
Renovating houses can work out well. It will expose them to all the trades. It contains all the elements one needs to master entrepreneurship. It’s tangible and if one focuses more on affordable housing vs McMansions if fulfills a real need.

At first lot’s of hands on, then moving to contracts.

Edit:
If he’s socially and environmental aware then also permaculture/natural building as applied to the above. Having hands in the earth can re-orient the listless.

Plumbing. I kid you not. All the plumbers are getting old and there are no fresh professionals coming into the business. It is probably the same with being an electrician and such. We need more skilled workers instead of college students studying basket waving and urban development in the 70s.

"Plumbers Job Outlook, 2016-26 16% (Much faster than average)"

"Job Growth Holds Promise For Graduates. Trained electricians are in high demand as employment is projected to grow 14 percent around the country from 2014 to 2024, according to the BLS. ... With that in mind, it's expected that jobs for electricians will continue to increase in the future."

Definitely plumbing. Just getting to say reamer, discharge, self rimming, nipple, ballcock... Then you get a free pass to walk around with the crack of your ass sticking out. Yep, definitely plumbing.

This is a great example of the fact that modern technology allows you to abandon classical education.

Classical education yes, but College courses can provide needed resources for those who want to sharpen there skills or learn new ones. The world wide web is full of false information, learner be ware.

There are journeymen who's entire life ambition is to earn money. And then there are people who want to actually live life to the fullest. The former are happy with trade level education, no matter if it's an actual trade like a plumber or a software developer who knows about nothing but software development. The latter appreciate education for education's sake in addition to teaching a specific skill. Life's a lot more rewarding for the latter.
And even if you're absolutely practical focused, learning how to learn is always going to take you further than just learning a specific skill, and classical education is centered around learning out to learn, no matter if it's virtual or physically at a university.

Well spoken. Critical thinking (not fossilized skepticism) will open up unknown worlds.

So is academic learning. Not to mention most classes/lectures are available online, so...

I didn't say completely full of false information, but as far as Academic learning some people may prefer in class environments verses online.
