A system which cannot absorb the educated graduates sure does little good to the "education cause". Many countries have thousands of grads driving taxis and being tour guides etc. Very quickly they lose most of what they learned in college and get sucked into the grind.

That is not true for US or West atleast, even now.

Sounds like you're assessing the value of degrees only in terms of future employment and earning power, then?

That's not my perspective or frame of reference at all.

I think of the value of formal education (other than for vocational courses like law/medicine, of course) as being more for what remains with you, long after what you've learned has mostly been forgotten, and the fact that you have letters after your name isn't really relevant at all.

if liberal arts colleges in the US taught students how to think outside the box , how to do research, how to work in teams and how to survive it might be worthwhile. if not it is an extended high school full of students who are doing remedial work in the basics= reading writing and arithmetic which they should have learned by the 10th grade as in Europe.

College is not a waste money or time. It's a necessity for "some" people to earn more money.

College was definetely not a wate of time for me. I went 5 years and graduate and focused on getting paid. I was getting paid my 3rd year in college via a co-op in my field of study. I went to every career fair and sold myself for an employer, til someone hired me. Before I graduated, I had 4 job offers waiting. I didn't have time to waste like other kids. Some kids have no idea how to hustle for something. These kids had their parents sending them tons of money monthly, and they was blowing it. I didn't have this type giving. I had to make money in and out of college. Didn't have time for bullshitting. I seen soooo many kids blowing their parents hard earn money bullshitting.

How else will a trader get capital to trade? For me, nobody giving me a penny to trade with, all capital comes from my full time job.

College is a waste of money and time for people who do not "exactly " how they plan to make alot of money after they graduate.

For many people going to a trade school is a lot more practical than college since it gives you practical training & some hands on experience inside of 1-2 years geared for a specific trade which can get into a well paying job much faster and for much less cost.

Obviously college is a must for a profession like lawyer, doctor, architect, engineer, etc.

You still need the degree or noone listening to you.

Look, it's about getting paid. I don't care if the degree was made of toilet paper, you not getting a high paying professional job without a degree. I highly encourage all kids to get a degree. My kid don't have a choice, they will be getting a degree in a professional field. I don't care if kid want to purse their own business adventures. Do that while you in college or afterwards. But will be getting a degree. That business not guaranteed to work.

In what way is the US superior, on an empirical level, to any other nation's education? Or even remotely equitable with any nation that compares economically. Other than expense, of course.

Man, was I disappointed. Instead, college consisted of classes where I was told to obey the rules, follow the instructions, memorize this information, and regurgitate it on a test. Do that, and you’ll be fine.

That kind of approach destroys critical thinking.

Now having said all that. I remember back in college having this American History class where they test you after each chapter to write a short essay on 10 random key words, places, names, events from a list at the end of the chapter. The list could be 20-100 words, but what got put on the test was random.

Or so you thought when I noticed that it wasn't random at all, but the instructor picked out every 10th word from that list. Significance didn't matter. The list could have contained the name Abe Lincoln or Civil War but if the name didn't fall in a 10th place it wasn't on the test. If it was some insignificant name or event in history that only deserve maybe a few sentences at best and it was in the 10th place, it was on the test.

I passed the class by the way. Stopped reading the textbook after chapter 2 or 3. And the instructor was kind of a jerk. In this case having pattern recognition skill helped.

I think that the secret is in language.That`s why English became so globaly usable.
