are you living in an alternate reality. We who vote to close the border's to terrorists until we can sort out the terrorists are called racists by you lefties all the time. (I know you claim you are not a lefty.) In fact I think we should halt immigration until we put at least half of the 94 million back to work and wages go up.

I live in Canada. If that's an "alternate reality", well, I love this reality. We actually do screen for terrorists and border control is decent in Canada. Certainly Americans can't bring their guns in. Again, I have no idea what you think a "lefty" is, but your continual use of the term to supposedly make an argument is extremely ignorant. Reminds me of McCarthy when he blackballed actors who were allegedly Communists.
Americans are often way over the top on patriotism and things like flying giant flags all over the landscape. If Colin wants to protest current events, I'm all for it, it's pretty healthy use of free speech compared to branding people "lefties" and fearing immigrants. I don't remember you protesting the idea of deporting someone gainfully employed, born and raised in Wisconsin, to Africa as one racist poster has suggested on this site.
What you seem totally oblivious to is that in an aging population, immigration is a necessary factor. Without immigration, not only would certain skilled jobs go unfilled, you'd get a rapidly shrinking tax base paying the federal debt, with even more new costs coming in as the senior count grows. If you think medical premiums are high now, just wait. Tax bills are going to go up now even without these trends, because the federal debt is bloated due to the subprime crisis and the Iraq War.
Perhaps some think the solution is closing the borders, hoping a bunch of you Americans fill some new factory jobs, and try to coerce "American" families to have more babies. That's an unrealistic expectation. You need immigration, you need trade deals, you need to get along with different ethnic groups.

As you stated Canada has strict entry standards. I see this when I fly into the country. Anyone who looks like they may be an illegal immigrant is turned back at the airport.
Canada does not allow any person to simply slip into their country and live there illegally. Canada is very selective about which immigrants to permit entry into the county; only allowing people with needed skills or critical occupations as incoming immigrants (or with work permits). There is also a requirement that the person show they will not be a burden on Canada's social welfare system before permanent admission is granted.
Why shouldn't the U.S. follow similar standards for the admission of immigrants? First, follow Canada's stance of taking a strong policy against illegal immigrants. Secondly have a firm policy of only allowing in immigrants whose skills help the country.
All western nations have the issue of lower birth rate and need immigration to increase population so their social benefit systems don't fall apart due to an aging population. The "winning" western nations will be those which support reasonable scale of targeted immigration of people with necessary skills who can be properly & easily assimilated into their culture.
I happen to think that the U.S. immigration is a mess and we need to have it reformed. We need it reformed to allow an increase in legal immigration of people with skills to help the country along with measures to decrease illegal immigration. For example - the U.S. H1-B Visa system is a mess because it locks high skill employees into indentured servitude at a single company and does not allow them to change jobs. This depresses wages across the industry because companies tend to pay H1-B Visa people very low. This system needs to be reformed so an individual in the U.S. on a H1-B Visa for a period of time can work at any company (BTW - large employers dislike this idea greatly, they want cheap tech labor).
If you support america letting in more terrorists given our current system is unable to screen out terrorists effective (as told told us by the head of our security agencies) you are a leftist.
Trying to equate that to what McCarthy did is a leftist trick.

2. I have never been one to think that continue a ponzi scheme is a good idea.
its time our leaders become responsible and work towards ideas that will have us live withou our means. There is a reason Ponzi schemes are illegal. We don't have to have tax bills go up.
Besides if we did not bring in 60 to 80 million new americans more than half of which are on govt assistance... we might not have a financial problem to begin with.
If we are going to allow immigration it must be done in a fiscally responsible manner.
If we are going to do good humanitarian deeds... lets do them in a sustainable manner.
What we are doing now is follow a sick leftist path to destruction of our great nation.
