This is very similar to Jeff Bezos' purchase of the Washington Post.

Think about the psychology: in order for business leaders to make such high profile gestures that are completely unrelated to their main enterprise, they must be feeling pretty damn good about themselves. Which usually happens when their company's stock price is at all time highs..

I would put Bezos in a different category. He's worth about 12 billion, Mayer about 300 million.

Bezos could buy a yacht or 3, which would mean he has toys, or he could buy a newspaper which would mean politicians would kiss up to him the way they do Murdoch. Plus it's a new challenge for the entrepreneur in him, which he most certainly is.

Speaking of yachts, Abramovich has 2 or 3, because he wants them waiting for him wherever he wants to head to. I saw Pelorus in Cannes some years back, it's more of a ship than a yacht. The man sure knows how to enjoy his money.
 
He'll tell us his price drivers anticipate even these items and factor them in before they happen. That would explain his claims that the only thing wrong with them is they are too early. :)

This is interesting indeed. I first came to Thailand in the boom years before the 1997 crisis. The sheer number of late model Mercedes Benzes on the road was amazing, many driven by young, pretty women. So I asked what that was all about and was told times were good and the rich men were taking on mistresses, putting them up in condos (huge building boom too at the time) and buying them those cars.

We know what came next.
