A key polar bear population fell nearly by half in the past decade, marked by a dramatic increase in deaths of young cubs, a new U.S.-Canada study says. Researchers chiefly blame shrinking sea ice from global warming. Scientists from the U.S. Geological Surveyand Environment Canada tagged and released polar bears in the southern Beaufort Sea off Alaska and northwestern Canada from 2001 to 2010. The bear population shrank to about 900 in 2010, down from about 1,600 in 2004.
Study lead author Jeff Bromaghin said only two of 80 polar bear cubs the team tracked between 2004 and 2007 survived. Normally about half of cubs live. He thinks the cubs starved because there was a lack of summer sea ice and they couldn't get to seals. The study is in the journal Ecological Applications.

Top Republican Finally Acknowledges Human-Caused Climate Change

A big GOP frontman seems to have changed his tune on climate change.
Sen. John Thune (R-SD), chair of the Senate Republican Conference, admitted in an Fox News interview on Sunday that human activity has likely caused some climate changes.
This is a big step, though in the same segment Thune expressed negative feelings on the US-China climate deal reached last week, and promoted the Keystone XL pipeline.
As a member of a party often noted for its representatives' unwillingness to cooperate with national climate policy or even for their outright climate denialism, Thune's first remark was a solid acknowledgment that human-caused climate change is occurring.
"Well, look, climate change is occurring, it's always occurring, Chris," Thune said in the interview with Chris Wallace on Fox News Sunday. "There are a number of factors that contribute to that, including human activity. The question is, what are we going to do about it and at what cost?"
It's a notable statement from a Republican leader — stating that the climate is changing and there is likely a human factor at play. It's also significant that he asked the question many of his colleagues haven't dared to: "What will we do about it?"

Rand Paul admitted during an appearance on Bill Maher's recent show that man has caused CO2 levels to increase. Interestingly, as far as I know, he did not admit that man made global warming is real. Some brilliant political none-speak there and Maher unfortunately did not press him on it.
It would be premature to admit that since there is some debate over whether man-made CO2 molecules behave differently than naturally occurring CO2 molecules.
True. Man-made CO2 is not a greenhouse gas like the natural CO2. Some say it actually will cool the planet. That it's a refrigerator gas. There also people who say the earth is only 6 thousand years old. I mean, their opinion is just as good as someone elses right?
And the glaciers are melting because it's summer.
