Quote from BSAM:
Brandon, my friend, you are wrong on this issue. The death penalty is a deterent to crime. But, it has to be administered in a swift and sure manner to be meaningful. In this country, it is not. Thus, your assumption that the death penalty is not a deterent.

By the way zzz I do not think anyone is arguing the U.S. is currently a Christian nation. So your crack on that subject is a more "accepted anti Christian hate speech. Perhaps you should concern yourself with that subject.
Regarding racism against gangs. That has to be a slip. I think all property owning, life loving people have an intolerance of violent gangs of any race.
Regarding being pro death penalty. A question I posed to myself?
Would you be willing to carry out the sentence personally. Would you be able to flip the switch?
Would you be able to argue for the death sentence before a jury in the penalty phase of a trial.

Quote from ZZZzzzzzzz:
Doesn't work. People still kill in Texas, and they kill everyone they find guilty.
So the facts show that the penalty of death does not in fact deter all potential killers.
Hell, we see in the Middle East that people execute themselves for their causes (suicide bombers) so why do you think people who are not rational, are suddenly going to stop and say "I won't kill today because I am afraid if I get caught the state will executel me...."
It just doesn't make sense, and statistics show that to be the case, that the death penalty does not stop people from the act of killing another human being.

Quote from resinate:
Has the murder rate in the US gone down since the death penalty was reinstated in the 1970s? Not that I know of.
A few years ago, the governor of Illinois suspended the death penalty entirely after finding the state in the process of executing innocents. Chicago has been breaking records for LOW murder rates the last couple of years.
Deterrent, doubtful. Fuel on the flames, likely.
As has been stated, the US is among the most violent nations on Earth. Why should this not be so?. We have been whipping ourselves into frenzies of fear and hatred of dangerous others plus warring on them pretty solidly since WW2. Its no surprise that we kill each other frequently and then quench our fear, pain and anger with more killing.
