V, IV, any others who may know this stuff--why are the December futures contracts traded more than the other months? Going out several years there is volume, but only for the December contracts. What's up?

From my own understanding , if you are hedging for your commercial requirements so far out you don't care if its Jan Feb Mar 2015 etc, instead you stick to a yearly contract the most liquid one, hence they all trade the Dec contracts generating the liquidity. When you get closer to the dates you can then spread into the other months depending on your specific needs.

Thanks EK -- so it seems like it's kind of agreed upon that Dec represents the "whole year" for longer term speculation... makes sense.. thanks bro!

yw & you can see some more volume in the June contracts, the half yearly marks
