Oil falls more than $3, U.S. crude below $100

1/ LONDON, March 11 (Reuters) - North Sea Brent crude and U.S. crude oil futures NEWOILOIL fell more than $3 on Friday as the powerful earthquakes and tsunami in Japan worsened the global market sentiment.

Brent crude fell to as low as $112.25 a barrel and U.S. crude dropped to as low as $99.01.

By 1213 GMT, Brent was trading at $112.76 and U.S. crude was at $99.92.


2/ A relatively quiet start to planned protests in Saudi Arabia also dented oil prices.

Saudi Arabia's capital was quiet ahead of a planned day of demonstrations that will test whether activists calling for political reform online will succeed in taking their protests to the streets.

In Hofuf, more than 200 protesters took to the streets, two activists told Reuters, responding to the call by online social networks for protests in favour of political reform. [ID:nLDE72A02Z]

1/ .COM - Some 2,000 residents living near Japan's Fukushima nuclear plant were urged to evacuate Friday._ Engineers said they were unable to pump water to cool the nuclear reactor at a northeastern power plant crippled by the 8.9-magnitude earthquake.

Officials in Fukushima issued the advice for residents living within a two-kilometer (1.2-mile) radius of the No. 2 reactor of the Fukushima No. 1 plant, operated by Tokyo Electric Power Co.

Back up here. There was something wrong with my computer earlier and it took me almost an hour to send my last post.

As far as the tsunamis go we'll see what happens in Hawaii in a few minutes. The expert on CNN was saying that tsunamis travel at 500 miles an hour and so a 6 foot tsunami, which they say is the upper expected limit here, is way more powerful than a 6 foot wave at the beach on a normal day. Tsunamis are huge masses of water and there are a series of waves, not just one big wave.

I'm going to get some groceries and fill my van up with gas in a little while here. :) Hopefully everything will be okay.

I'm maybe going to let the trading go today at least until later. We'll see what happens.

Riyadh quiet on "Day of Rage", helicopters hover overhead

Cairo/Riyadh - Online activists said Friday that the Saudi capital Riyadh was quiet, with no protests seen after mid-day prayers, but that there were helicopters hovering over the city.

Activists said major streets had been cordoned off by security and that there was a heavy security presence around mosques.

This comes as protesters had been warned by authorities against taking part in a so-called 'Day of Rage,' where activists said they would protest nationwide to demand greater reforms and freedoms in the conservative kingdom.

Meanwhile, a collective of anonymous hackers called Anonops wrote on Twitter that its members are going to target Saudi government websites to support activists on the ground.
