NEW YORK, March 7 (Reuters) - U.S. crude oil futures ended
nearly 1 percent higher to hit their highest levels since
September 2008 as raging violence in Libya spawned further worries
about supply disruptions.

Fears persisted that similar uprisings could hit other oil
producers in the Middle East and North Africa, further raising
geopolitical risks.

April crude CLJ1 settled well off highs near $107 a barrel,
however, as rumors spread that Muammar Gaddafi was seeking an exit
deal.

Traders next focus on weekly U.S. inventory reports. A Reuters
poll forecast that domestic crude stocks rose 300,000 barrels,
while distillates and gasoline fell 900,000 barrels and 1.3
million barrels, respectively. [EIA/S]

<< Monday old news: it seems there was partial truth in the gaddafi deal rumer Monday >>

Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi is "unlikely" to be seeking safe passage out of his war-torn country despite a BBC report that he was preparing to leave, US officials told NBC News.

The BBC report, which quoted an unsourced story in a pan-Arab newspaper, said that Gaddafi had solicited the help of the rebel National Transitional Council for help leaving the country.

The rumor came after an earlier report that one of Gaddafi's associates appealed to opposition chiefs for dialogue, a sign the aging autocrat may be ready to compromise with the unprecedented revolt.

The report caused oil prices to pull back after soaring to near $107 a barrel.

Jadallah Azous Al-Talhi, a Libyan prime minister in the 1980s who is originally from eastern Libya, appeared on state television reading an address to elders in Benghazi.

He asked them to "give a chance to national dialogue to resolve this crisis, to help stop the bloodshed, and not give a chance to foreigners to come and capture our country again."

The offer, rapidly dismissed by rebels, coincided with a renewed publicity drive by Gaddafi that warned European nations to the north of the Mediterranean that if he fell "you will have immigration, thousands of people from Libya will invade Europe."

Ahmed Jabreel, an aide to rebel leader Mustafa Abdel Jalil, said: "Any negotiations must be on the basis that Gaddafi will step down. There can be no other compromise."
