Cities closing libraries, destroying books

Quote from fkbsuhites:

Palin loves to burn books. Sounds like a republican paradise.

You are an idiot.

It is hard to imagine a world without libraries but it is also hard to see how they are essential nowdays given our access to information from our homes and offices.

I spent alot of time in this room. I hope people still have access to such places in the future:

Who needs books anymore, unless you are looking for hard science books. It is all on the web now. There are some people who are too poor to afford the internet, I disagree, as anyone who can afford to eat, can afford a $200 used laptop and $25 for Broadband.

Everyone tries to charge for the information on the internet though. At least at the library its free. And if you do want certain information and you pay for it on the internet, sometimes they only give you half the information and then try to sell you the other half later. I remember in the early 90s I used to go to the library and read the autobiographies of the lives of traders. Now you can get a few sentences or a wiki page about people, but nothing in depth. Sometimes reading books can give you a good understanding of peoples mindsets that you just cant get from a wiki page.

This is a terrible tragedy if it spreads. Libraries are the last sanctuary where one can go and truly go into deep thought in a public place. No music, silence is the golden rule. The iPad, eBooks etc are awesome, but a library is not about the books stored there!

I consider a library a modern cathedral, a place to feel connected with the past. I admit, I mostly hate modern libraries because they look like hospitals to me - sanitized, bland, devoid of any ambiance. To me a library is almost a religious experience. There are a few great libraries left in the world, with an old world charm of scholarship.

I agree Nitro. Are there any libraries like that in the Chicago area. Harold Washington is very bland. Maybe Northwestern?

The last I heard is that basketball players were still making 10s of Millions of Dollars. We all pay for that crap, even if we do not go and watch those stupid games. We need to abandon these excess sports before we abandon the libraries.

The only people who will get hurt by this will be the Librarians only.

I live is a small town of 20K people, but the Library is top notch, at least for stuff kids use. It costs more in gas and effort to get a book and then return it than to just buy many of these books, better yet, You Tube has most of that stuff for free. I would like to see my Library closed and see my tax bill go down.

I don't agree that everyone can afford a $200 laptop (if these even work?) and $25 broadband each month. Poor parents may not feel that this is a priority for their kids. Some people are eating with EBT or food stamps. These people may not afford a $200 laptop - if u can get a working one at that price in USA!

"They" should just buy something like an old coal mine or salt mine...and stick the books and stuff down there until they have the money to support such a thing again. Just my $0.02
