1 fill the coffers due to the trade war
2 use Hong Kong as leverage to seal a trade deal. or
3. Do it now, since Trump doesn't care, until his hand was forced by a dem introduced resolution.

Yes the IP protection is bad so the environment is not quite innovation friendly like the US but the system does have its advantage in that they can throw a lot of money at something and get it done quickly.
People underestimate China should really pay a visit and your jaw will drop. Tickets are cheap. $400 round trip. Heck if there are enough interest here I may be motivated enough to lead a ET tour group there for a couple of weeks so we can shoot breeze about trading and politics along the way.
I get your point and disagree with it. No one's replacing the bulk of China's manufacturing at the same quality, expense, and volume. It would take decades for the "replacement" countries to output what China does.
I don't disagree but it is doable
A "fortunate" result of China's economy is they're slowly industrializing Africa and using it as their China. I say "fortunate" because although the human rights and environmental violations will certainly exist, no one's dumping money into Africa's industrialization but the Chinese.
I'm sure this trade has thrown cold water on some of those plans though.
No doubt they are seeking to break out of that, but this "trade war" will hurt China far more than it will hurt the US. Sort of like being fired would be for an employee vs a multinational.
