Ok, a delay in the Chinese annexation of Taiwan could be looked at as the Chinese losing ground. Why should we want them to lose ground? If we see them as such a big long term threat that we feel the need to interfere in their affairs, then why are we trading with them and why haven’t we launched a preemptive strike? Obviously, I’m being a bit facetious here, but why not at least try to get a commitment out of the Chinese to follow international law, give diplomacy a chance, and maybe combine our resources on major energy security and food security infrastructure. Some important things don’t get done because the risk and cost for a single country is too large. Other major things get done, but they are redundant, causing inefficient utilization of resources.
As far as the Communist ideology is concerned, yes it sucks. But the reality is, it is here to stay no matter what we might feel about it. Besides, we have a increasing Communist problem within the US that we are losing ground to. Let’s focus on that instead of being an active enemy of the Chinese.
Arguably, the communist Soviet Union was here to stay. OR NOT.
The choices, as with the soviet union, are not binary whereby we either get into full conflict or do nothing and tell them that the world is their oyster- and we will watch.
Influencing, supporting, and defending our friends and allies and protecting them from expansionism is not the same as trying to confront and replace the homeland of the expansionist country. Yes, it may thwart their plans but the motives and actions are different. China would like to own Australia too but Australia is our friend and ally. We must be one to them as well.
Similarly Taiwan is a friend and ally. I have not nor should anyone buy into the idea that they are a chinese possession and we and they are just being difficult. The North Koreans still claim South Korea too, except South Korea is our friend and ally too. The reality is that the chinese had a revolution and took mainland china. The other reality is that they did not occupy and get Taiwan. Ditto for the North Koreans and South Koreans. Our being a defender and supporter of South Korea is just a historical reality that North Korea has to deal with. There are lots of historical realities that need to be accepted. There are some realities for the Communist Chinese to accept too while the Taiwanese are having to accept the fact that the mainland has been lost, at least in this period of history. If a will arises within the Taiwanese to re-unite, well then that would a different dynamic. We can talk about that when it happens.
