It hardly made a flicker in the news - China begins trading crude oil futures denominated in renminbi. They are the largest consumer on the planet having surpassed the U.S. not long ago.

Been all over the financial news. My opinion is that if they continue with closed off and/or controlled markets it won’t have anything near the liquidity of ICE Brent (the deepest crude contract out there).
China seems to be getting ahead of themselves and while the “threat” shouldn’t be underestimated its not as if the other world powers are just going to stand by and watch.
With that fool Trump in charge countries like Mexico, Canada etc. can't be relied on to support the US.Eventually it's going to end up with just a fragmented world with East against the West with the East pack led by China and comprised of Middle East, Southeast Asia and North, East, West and Central Africa strengthened by China's ambitious "New Silk Road" project. The West is going to be led by USA joined by Europe, Japan, maybe South Korea (if it doesn't decide to unite with North Korea and join China), Canada, Mexico, Israel and some South Asian countries and South Africa.
And then there are the "swing" countries that are up for grabs would be Australia, New Zealand, Central & South America countries and Russia with Australia and New Zealand being the "Western" countries club but geographically closer to China and the Central & South American countries are the opposite, being more in the East pack but actually located closer to United States and Russia geographically close to everybody including United States (Sarah Palin was right after all by saying she can see Russia from her house LOL) but in a love-hate relationship with everybody. LOL
Will be interesting to see how everything plays out. Everything is going to be determined by who stays on which team and who switches sides.

I think the interesting thing about China is how it has managed to have the advantages of a well run, one party state with the capitalist advantages too. Their businesses seem to be booming while the tired ole democracies are struggling with their outdated systems. The democracies will probably collapse the way ancient Greece did to the new super power Rome.
