Yea, its called a trade deficit. The tough thing is that a large part of the trade deficit is oil imports.

In 2008, the US send away $440bn to foreigners to pay for oil imports. That made up 65% of the $673bn deficit in 2008. Cut off these imports and the economy will crash. The deficit is a bad thing, national debt is a bad thing, but dependence on oil is the worst thing.
