I would like to comment regarding my general observation of Trump's negotiating skills. It would seem he has never learned that successful negotiation between two powerful countries depends on finding win-win compromises. Trump does not seem to comprehend that he isn't negotiating with a contractor that has limited legal recourse, and could expect to be able to bully into submission.
It appears that Trump is not truly interested, or either not capable of, serious negotiation on trade issues with other countries. He seems happy to settle for the appearance of negotiating followed by a claim of great success. This I believe is nothing other than an attempt to fool naive supporters.
Knowing Trump's business history, I guess it is not surprising that he is not a good negotiator. Trump has a long history of business failures. He has been involved in at least 3500 lawsuits as an adult! The approximately 200 million he inherited apparently had been enough to employ lawyers to brow beat many, certainly not all, persons or organization into submission.
Here is what USA Today had to say prior to his being elected. [

The legal actions provide clues to the leadership style the billionaire businessman would bring to bear as commander in chief. He sometimes responds to even small disputes with overwhelming legal force. He doesn’t hesitate to deploy his wealth and legal firepower against adversaries with limited resources, such as homeowners. He sometimes refuses to pay real estate brokers, lawyers and other vendors.
As he campaigns, Trump often touts his skills as a negotiator. The analysis shows that lawsuits are one of his primary negotiating tools. He turns to litigation to distance himself from failing projects that relied on the Trump brand to secure investments. As USA TODAY previously reported, he also uses the legal system to haggle over his property tax bills. His companies have been involved in more than 100 tax disputes, and the New York State Department of Finance has obtained liens on Trump properties for unpaid tax bills at least three dozen times.
This pattern continues to this day -- I think there are currently numerous lawsuits he or his businesses are parties to, and explains in part why he has been such a singularly unsuccessful business man, losing millions for others but managing to save himself with a barrage of skillfully delivered lies, and if the testimony of others is to be believed, falsified bank statements. After his major bankruptcy, when he left ~72 U.S. banks holding the bag, he courted, and was courted by, Russian Oligarchs and ever since has been largely dependent on them and Deutsche Bank, the only western bank with a Russian Branch, for financing. Of course the Russians anticipate something in return other than profits, as they must be well aware of Trumps business prowess.
China may well be an unreliable partner and a thief of intellectual property, but Donald Trump is certainly not the one to successfully negotiate a solution to such a problem. His tactics will fail!
