My car is at ABT right now. They'll be done installing $10,500 worth of audio equipment in a few days, and I'll let you guys know how that goes. Thanx to everyone who provided recommendations.

Now I'd like just one more local referral. Does anyone know a good, competent E.N.T. specialist in the Chicago area? (Ideally in the north or west suburbs). I know this is asking alot, but I'd like an E.N.T. doctor who actually gets his/her diagnoses right most of the time, and puts some effort into his work so that he actually <b>tries</b> to avoid screwing up.

Again, I know this sort of minimal competence is very rare in any field (but especially medical practice), and what I'm asking for here is probably unreasonable. Still, I need to try. Thanx in advance for any helpful answers.

I used to live in Elmhurst (have since moved into the city). My internist out there was a very competent young doc, Michael Nosek (chief resident when he was in med school at Northwestern, Phi Beta Kappa, etc). As an internist, he is very thorough, and gives you the straight facts of your case without being judgmental or preachy...though he is not without compassion.

Anyhow...I had an allergy problem once, and he referred me to an ENT who is also at the Elmhurst Memorial Center for Health (1200 S. York Rd). His name is John Ortega. He also seemed quite competent...and also with a 'practical' kind of manner.

In my case, some acute allergic condition was causing me to have severe coughing spells, which would constrict my windpipe. For a brief period there were times when I would wake up in the middle of the night gasping for air...and in kind of a panic. I told Dr. Ortega that the feeling was really scary...like I was about to die or something! He tells me, "Well...the worst that would happen is that you would pass out, your windpipe would relax, and you would start breathing again."

I was so relieved!! :p
