Sort of. I watched it live. Nakamura made an impulsive sacrifice of a piece for three pawns, two of which he couldn't hold. I think he was totally surprised by Qd2, spent way too much time trying to find a refutation, and then went all in when he decided on the unsound sacrifice. Watching your clock run down to seconds has a weird effect on people
It was interesting the way that Gary handled the opening and found the most dynamic way to handle the position in a speed game!
Motivation and form are so critical in these tournaments. What makes Carlsen so deadly is that he seems to will form as he needs it. Although he has a hard time getting the engine started. Without Carlsen playing, the tournament is very hard to predict.
Its a tossup. The young players have the edge as they have the stamina for such an event. On the other hand:
- Caruana and MVL play so much that at some point your brain starts to go silly. Top 4 but I don't think they win it.
- Anand is too old. 50%.
- Aronian definitely, but his motivation seems to have waned a bit. 50%.
- Sivdler is possible, but obviously a dark horse. 50%.
- Nakamura is showing form at the right time. I am going to guess he is the winner.
- Ding Liren very possible. Fearless player, which often comes back to haunt you. Guessing top 3.
- Wesley So is probably the most underrated player in the field. Getting stronger by the tournament. Top 4.
- Giri will score 50%.
- Topalov. 50%.
With Carlsen, it's not surprising when he strings together 3, 4, or 5 wins in a row.
Interesting that the late, great Korchnoi (RIP) doesn't have a very high opinion of him.

Carlsen reminds Kornchoi too much of Karpov, and those loses were very painful for Korchnoi as he was well aware that was probably his last chance to ascend the greatest heights. Also, it is hard to be impressed after having faced Fischer.

Impulsive is what makes Nakamura dangerous in a blitz tournament because he is hard to anticipate and you don't have much time to digest the unexpected information.
