In a time of crisis there are always unscrupulous individuals who readily take advantage of other people’s vulnerability and sadly the current health crisis is no different.
The Commodity Futures Trading Commission in the US is warning that COVID-19-related scams are increasing at a disturbing rate. They prey on people’s anxiety and uncertainty in the midst of the biggest health crisis for the past hundred years.
The CTFC issued a statement: “During this period of market volatility, we want to ensure the public has important information to help detect and stop fraud. We will aggressively pursue misconduct in our markets tied to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic. There is never an appropriate time to prey on innocent people’s fears.”
This is disgusting but entirely unsurprising and I fear that these incidents will only get worse.
