All the dogooders get on tv as they drop a load of cornmeal in some 3rd world village and they all hold hands and tell the world how wonderful they are, They feed the poor and protect the enviroment. How wonderful.
Why not let these people industrialize and take care of themselves. But, OH NO, can't have a group of people that are not dependent on us for their food, clothing, housing, etc.

Power generation, transmission & distribution does not work like that. Even an 800 mile by 800 mile solar power plant would not supply power to the USA, or even one state, as the grid would fail on a daily basis.
Emissions, GHG trading, & carbon offsets help finance renewable energy projects. They are a key piece of making the project happen.
So it's not just a scam, it's not black & white like that.
P.S. And the governments are doing more than you realize.

So. Instead of encouraging people to purchase these snakeoil credits, why not encourage them to invest in the renewable energy projects and then they will have a future stake in their success. As it is now only The Algores of the world are making anything on these credits and they are not responsible to the folks who purchase them. Make them responsible to investors and maybe they will deliver on their, so far, empty promises.

If someone wishes to build & finance a renewable energy projects, these same credits are part of the equation. They can sell them or retain & retire them.

Hey, If these renewable energy projects are so wonderful and the future is so bright for them then why do we need to screw people with the idea that if they buy carbon credits, then they are doing something wonderful for the planet.
So all you chicken littles out there who believe the sky is falling, that we were going into an iceage in the 70's, that the ocean was dying in the 80's, that the world was wonderful in the 90's and now we are burning up. Why not take this on yourselves and leave the rest of us, the ones with the ability to think and reason ourselves, out of your scam projects.

As far as funding the administrative costs. The big PROFITS will take care of that.

So? what's your point? Do you really think people are going to want to give up nice things that they enjoy for a frugal lifestyle? The genie is out of the bottle and that is certainly not a practical solution. Richard Branson is not grounding his planes. However, he buys voluntary offsets to neutralize their emissions. You can pay someone else to be your social conscience and offest your emissions elsewhere. The globe doesn't care if you drive a Hummer but you help to finance landfills getting cleaned up in India to neutralize your excesses. If greenhouse gases at the margin are reduced by a few % as a result, that has a positive impact. In addition, there is signficant attention and awareness now being brought forward by these "profit motivated" participants. The public is reducing, recycling and reusing now due to all the talk about it. I guarantee you that someone reduced man-made greenhouse gas emissions, even if slighty, simply as a result of the discussion on this thread.

were you burned on a carbon credit project? can't think of any other reason for the viterol--OR-- more likely just parroting shawn hannity or marharisi rushbo?? credits are something you can do NOW, renewable energy projects, although smart, are speculative endeavors. don't you think it's wise to offset something that is already happening instead of living in a speculative future?
by the way, i bought credits--- it's great to be involved even on a small scale in this new, effective system of helping the environment.
