Captain Sanders: Civil War

Silenced

PHILADELPHIA — Bernie Sanders likes to boast that he has ignited a fiery movement.

At times on Monday, it seemed that even he had lost control of how it burns.

On the opening day of the Democratic National Convention, the ragtag coalition of liberals that Mr. Sanders is supposed to deliver to Hillary Clinton heckled from the convention floor. They marched in the streets. They protested outside the arena.

They refused to go quietly...

Jill Stein’s Ideas Are Terrible. She Is Not the Savior the Left Is Looking For.

Now that Hillary Clinton has officially won the Democratic presidential nomination, chances are we're going to hear a lot more about Jill Stein. The Green Party candidate, currently polling in the low single digits nationally, has been gunning for the support of disaffected Bernie Sanders fans, urging them to “keep the revolution going” by getting behind her own long-shot White House bid. Tuesday, she was on hand at the Democratic convention to meet aggrieved Sanders delegates, some of whom formed a small crowd around her to chant, “Bernie or Jill.” Thanks to progressive grassroots rage, she may well peel off a few percentage points of the vote come the fall, when she's expected to be on the ballot in about 47 states.

Which is a pity. Because even by the standards of protest candidates, Stein—whose press team did not respond to an interview request—is an absolutely awful torchbearer for the far left. She's a Harvard-trained physician who panders to pseudoscience. She mangles pet policy issues. And her cynical retelling of the past eight years has nothing to do with the reality of recorded history...

It is a bit strange to me that, people that are at best shady, are so embraced instantly that they get a job immediately after being let go for questionable ethical behavior at the last job.

The Democratic Party is one big machine. No wonder the Bern keeps a healthy distance.

AP sources: CEO at Democratic National Committee resigns

WASHINGTON — The chief executive of the Democratic National Committee has resigned in the wake of an email hack that embarrassed the party on the eve of its presidential nominating convention.

That's according to three Democratic strategists familiar with Amy Dacey's decision to leave her job. The people spoke on condition of anonymity, because they were not authorized to discuss it publicly.

The Democrats say other personnel moves at the party are also expected Tuesday.

Dacey already has a new job. She has been hired by Squared Communications, a Democratic consulting firm based in Washington.

"As one of the top campaign strategists in our party, and with our experiences together on presidential, Senate and congressional campaigns, Amy will help our firm's clients navigate this and future election cycles," Michael Meehan, founder and CEO Squared Communications, said in a statement.

Before joining the DNC, Dacey was executive director of EMILY's List, which works to elect female Democrats.

Dacey's resignation is just the latest fallout from the hacked emails, which exposed an apparent lack of neutrality in the primary race between Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders, with party officials disparaging Sanders.

Earlier, party chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz resigned her position. After being booed at a pre-convention appearance last week in Philadelphia, Wasserman Schultz chose not to speak from the convention stage. Longtime Democratic operative Donna Brazile is serving as the party's interim chair.

The cache of more than 19,000 messages was made public by the group WikiLeaks.

Democratic Party officials learned in late April that their systems had been attacked after they discovered malicious software on their computers. A cybersecurity firm they employed found traces of at least two sophisticated hacking groups on the Democrats' network — both of which have ties to the Russian government.

Washington (CNN)Hillary Clinton is the presumptive Democratic nominee, but the party's civil war is set to continue at the Democratic Convention in Philadelphia as Bernie Sanders and his supporters fight for control of the platform -- the party's statement of its values and beliefs...

Fracking
Sanders has drawn sharp distinctions between himself and Clinton on fracking -- hydraulic fracturing to reach oil and gas deposits -- throughout the campaign, and especially in his run in California.

He then said the party itself needs to take a clear stance against the practice.
"I hope that the Democratic Party platform decides it is on the side of the American people, and I would hope that the Democratic party makes it clear that it has the guts to stand up the fossil fuel industry. That's exactly what I expect in the Democratic National Convention, to do what the American people want," Sanders said last week.

Sanders blasted Clinton in April, accusing her of flatly supporting the controversial practice.Clinton supported fracking during her time at the State Department, but has taken a more nuanced approach as a candidate.

(CNN)The Oklahoma Corporation Commission is telling operators to shut down 35 disposal wells that may have played a role in a 5.6-magnitude earthquake that shook at least six states Saturday, Gov. Mary Fallin said.

The disposal wells, which are linked to fracking and other industries that need to dispose of toxic waste water by injecting it deep into the earth, have recently drawn concern that they may actually induce earthquakes.

"This is a mandatory directive," Fallin said....

Clinton gives nod to Sanders with 65% top estate tax rate

COMMENTS Hillary Clinton on Thursday announced an increase to her proposed top estate tax rate in her latest nod to Sen. Bernie Sanders and the progressive wing of her Democratic Party.

Clinton has repeatedly called to put a larger tax burden on the wealthiest Americans to boost investment in infrastructure and job creation. The revision will put a 65 percent tax rate on estates valued at $1 billion or more per couple, the Clinton campaign said Thursday.

In 2016, estate tax returns must be filed for estates valued at $5.5 million or more, according to the Internal Revenue Service. The top rate currently sits at about 40 percent, while Clinton had previously proposed an increase to 45 percent on inherited property.

Sanders, Clinton's populist primary opponent, had previously proposed that top rate, which the Republican Party quickly criticized Thursday. Clinton's GOP opponent Donald Trump has called for an outright elimination of the so-called "death tax," a proposal Clinton and other critics have contended would help Trump himself.
