The bottom line.
I have a lot of problems with the Republicans as well, but at least many of them would act rationally if they felt they had the political freedom to do so. At least occasionally they will do the right thing.
A lot of people like to say "I vote for the best candidate, not the party." They seem to feel it makes them appear more intelligent and responsible. In a perfect world, I suppose it would but when we have a situation where one party seems hellbent on pursuing every wrong-headed policy imaginable, it is very irresponsible to give them more power. Even if you elect a Democrat with impeccable ideas, his election gives the crazies more power and you can bet those good ideas will go nowhere. More likely, those ideas that sounded so good on the campaign trail were just lies dreamed up by some James Carville-type consultant.

My advice: don't hold your breath.
Rich liberals like Warren Buffett who feel working people are not taxed enough can give as much of their multibillion dollar fortunes to the government as they want. None do. I guess they think they can find better uses for it, but we are just too dumb to do so. We'd probably end up buying a mobile home or something and spoil their view.
I particularly love the way guys like Buffett and Bill Gates' dad want to keep the estate tax. I'd like them to lead by example and donate their gargantuan estates to the government and stiff their kids. Oh yeah, that'll happen.
So nobody wants to work in my prop office? Come on, I'll even throw in free continental breakfast for everyone whether you are profitable or not? Sure someone wants to work in an office where we have a nice social safety net in case you turn out to be a horrible trader. It's a very happy office since 90% of the guys there are making more then they would anywhere else. Come on, sign up. Now commissions are a little high but thats only because I provide unemployment benefits for traders that choose to sit at home and just play video games all day.

Gekko, I actually don't dislike you, believe it or not. Which isn't to say I really like you, either. You're just another poster, as far as I'm concerned. I do think you make out to know a whole lot more than you really do (you seem confused with the difference between liking an idea and claiming it is "true"), but that's not really a problem in itself; it's just that when you couple it with an infantile NEED TO YELL ALL THE TIME (as if that adds credence to your point) it starts to get a tad annoying.

I don't believe that rising red line is necessarily a good thing -- it depends a good deal on what the money is spent on. I don't think you'll find me on record as saying that all spending is a good thing. In general though, yes, I do believe government programs add value to all society (not just the poor -- oops, I mean the "slackers" and "leeches").
I notice (with amusement) that I've been the subject of a few swipes in the last few pages.
Not that I mind being criticized (I welcome it), but it would be nice if an actual effort was made to understand my position before mocking it.Regarding my calling the principles of objectivism "fanciful", I'd be happy to explain why I think this. I'm a bit miffed that marketsurfer doens't appear as interested in backing up his assertions that life would be just oh so wonderful under such a system though.

Yes, that's exactly what I'd have said a few months ago, before I had the epiphany that all the Repubs' talk about fiscal conservatism IS NOT ACTUALLY IMPLEMENTED.
Bottom line here Triple A, Reps currently have a triple-hold on power, and government spending is spiraling upwards.
We're better off with a Dem pres/Rep house , or maybe vice versa.
Best to make the politicians fight each other, so they leave us alone...
