Summary: a canadian man found his house under assault from three men who were trying to burn it down with firebombs. He fired a revolver three times into the ground and into some trees to scare them off. He was prosecuted for a long list of gun crimes. Because of the obvious self defense situation, most were dismissed but he had to stand trial and spend 100k on legal expenses to defend charges of unsafe storage of firearms.
The crux of the Crown's case was that he either did not have his gun in a gun safe, if he did it was too close to his bedroom or he did not have his ammo in the safe too. A judge dismissed the charges but after a full trial.
I cite this to caution against what are always termed "common sense" gun regulations, eg requirements that guns be safely stored in this case. To the typical overzealous anti-gun prosecutor, safely stored apparently means unavailable in an emergency. No one is arguing for unsafe storage, but every time you cede these anti-gun people an inch, it can come back to haunt you.
