Canada arrests CFO of China's Huawei Technologies

Canadian authorities said Wednesday that they have arrested the chief financial officer of China's Huawei Technologies for possible extradition to the United States. China demanded her immediate release, and a former Canadian envoy to China warned the case might lead to retaliation by the Chinese against American and Canadian executives. The Wall Street Journal reported that U.S. authorities are investigating whether Chinese tech giant Huawei violated sanctions on Iran. (Daily Herald)

Huawei has reportedly agreed to make improvements to its telecommunications equipment and software, to address security fears that were expressed by British intelligence agencies. Without doing so, Huawei would essentially be shut out of future 5G network buildouts in the U.K. Meanwhile, the Japanese government is reportedly about to shut out Huawei and ZTE from its procurement plans, due to concerns over the Chinese being able to spy through the firms' equipment.
